Genrobotics' G-SPIDER Removes 168 Tonnes of Waste from Amayizhanchan Canal
G-SPIDER Removes 168 Tonnes of Waste from Amayizhanchan Canal in Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala | June 2026
Genrobotics' AI-powered G-SPIDER robotic canal cleaning system has completed a canal-cleaning operation at the Amayizhanchan Canal in Thiruvananthapuram, removing an estimated 168 tonnes of waste between February and June 2026.
The deployment was carried out by the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in collaboration with Genrobotics under Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0 to support mechanised canal cleaning and improve the safety and efficiency of urban sanitation operations.
Deployment Summary
● Work Started: 04 February 2026
● Last Working Day: 16 June 2026
● Total Loads Collected: 56
● Estimated Total Waste Removed: 168 Tonnes
During the deployment period, G-SPIDER completed 56 waste collection cycles, removing accumulated waste from the canal and supporting water flow improvement and routine waterway maintenance.
More Than a One-Time Cleaning Operation
The deployment revealed the continuous nature of waste accumulation in urban waterways. While large quantities of legacy waste were removed from the canal, fresh waste continued to enter the waterway through runoff, floating debris, vegetation, and improperly discarded materials.
Waste recovered during the operation included plastic bottles, food packaging materials, household waste, vegetation, and mixed floating debris. The findings highlighted the need for continuous monitoring and intervention rather than periodic cleaning alone.
To address this challenge, the deployment incorporated a specially designed multi-level barricade system at strategic locations within the canal. These barricades were designed to intercept floating waste before it could travel further downstream.
The collected waste was then identified, monitored, and removed by G-SPIDER, enabling a more continuous and systematic approach to canal maintenance.
Operating in a Challenging Environment
The system was deployed in a difficult section of the Amayizhanchan Canal beneath the Central Railway Station at Thampanoor.
The site is characterised by:
● Restricted accessibility
● Low vertical clearance
● Continuous water flow
● Limited equipment access
● Absence of safe human entry points
● Mixed and continuously accumulating waste
These conditions make conventional cleaning operations difficult and limit the effectiveness of traditional equipment. G-SPIDER was specifically designed to operate in such constrained environments without requiring human entry into the canal.
Technology Overview
G-SPIDER is a robotic canal-cleaning system developed by Genrobotics for waterway maintenance and environmental management applications.
Built on a Cable-Driven Parallel Robotics (CDPR) architecture and integrated with machine vision and sensor systems, the platform enables:
● Waste detection and assessment
● Robotic waste collection and removal
● Remote operation
● Continuous monitoring of canal conditions
● Deployment in confined and hard-to-access environments
The system is designed to support mechanised canal maintenance while reducing the need for manual intervention in hazardous locations.
